New initiative seeks to redefine the farming narrative

The Standard Group Plc is a multi-media organization with investments in media platforms spanning newspaper print operations, television, radio broadcasting, digital and online services, as well as outdoor advertising.

Our various media platforms include: The Standard newspaper, KTN, KTN News, Radio Maisha, The Nairobian, a weekly newspaper, Think Outdoor (billboard advertising) and Standard Digital.

True to our purpose, which is to inspire lives through media and entertainment, The Standard Group is moving into uncharted waters as we seek to grow our customer base.

Over the years, we have had great passion for matters food security, agri-business, famine and drought mitigation, and in ultimately helping Kenya attain sustainable growth of the agricultural sector. This requires commitment to support both small and large scale farmers by providing relevant information across all our media platforms.

As a result, today, we are launching the FarmKenya Initiative to bridge the huge information gap in the dissemination of niche content to players in the agriculture and agri-business sectors.

Whereas a small-scale farmer, for instance, would primarily want credible technical information on how to tackle pests or where to fi nd local markets for his produce, a large-scale farmer, on the other hand, may be seeking to grow his venture and increase his returns by targeting markets beyond Africa.

The FarmKenya Initiative is seeking to partner with a cross-section of stakeholders throughout the agriculture value chain – from the farm and research lab, to the market and dining table – to provide niche media platforms and products that will address the serious gaps existing in farming, production, processing, marketing and consumption of food and other farm produce.

We already have targeted shows and products: For example, The Smart Harvest & Technology magazine, which comes to you every Saturday inside The Saturday Standard and focuses on agribusiness, technology and farming in general. Our knowledge partner for the magazine is Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture & Technology (JKUAT).

We also run The Next Frontier show on KTN News once a week, featuring innovative agriculture by farmers across the country. With the FarmKenya Initiative, we seek to shift our engagement to a new level. The initiative seeks to create a new value proposition for Kenya’s agricultural sector and to reach out beyond Kenya’s borders to the rest of Africa.

Through the FarmKenya initiative, we are creating a new ecosystem that will provide communication solutions to all stakeholders in the agriculture value chain wherever they may be – using our digital platforms, television, radio and newspapers.

The relationship we seek to forge with partner organisations and institutions – be they in the private or public sector, operating locally or internationally – is one where you - the partner - determines how you want to use our media platforms to achieve your goals. We are ready to co-create the content that works for you, find solutions together, go to the farmers at the grassroots, and set up new effective channels of relaying your information.

Given the right conditions, growth is inevitable: so here is our chance to secure our growth together.

I welcome you to be part of FarmKenya Initiative.
