Agribusiness excellence awards launched, best performers feted

Players in the agribusiness sector were awarded during the first Agribusiness Excellence Awards 2019 held in Nairobi last Friday.

The event’s aim is to recognise exemplary players making great contributions towards the growth and development of the agribusiness industry.

Unga Farm Care East Africa scooped most of the awards for its various products in both human and animal nutrition. Some of the company’s products that attracted awards include the Afya Bora Maziwa, Afya Bora Stock lick and Champion Milking Salve.

“We engage with consumers and give what they want. The awards are a great motivation that will make us continue producing nutritional feeds for both animals and humans of high quality,” said Unga Holdings Marketing Manager Vincent Gitau.

Speaking at the event, Mr Orlando Lyomu, CEO Standard Group PLC said the company will continue providing farmers with information on best farming practices in partnership with agribusiness players.

“Farmers have for long suffered in terms of marketing their produce, as a company we want to play a crucial role in advocating policy change to solve such problems and we can only do this through partnerships with companies such as those here today,” said Orlando.

Prof Hammadi Boga, PS State Department in the Ministry of Agriculture, lauded the awards saying they will go a long way in motivating players to strive for excellence.

“The awards without doubt will create a positive competition spirit in the industry, which is a motivation we all need sometimes,” he said.

Notably, over 90 per cent of Kenya’s agricultural produce is sold in either raw or semi-processed form minimising the potential profits.

Professor Boga said there is need for partnerships between government and private sector to drive agribusiness growth.
