Brokers breaking potato rules, farmers protest

Farmers in Kinangop, Nyandarua County, are pleading with the government to enforce the 50kg potato packaging rule.

The farmers said brokers are still buying potatoes in extended bags despite the new rules.

“We are asking the government to act and reign in these brokers who have taken advantage of the current situation to fleece us,” Jane Wanjiru, the chairperson of the Geta Green Agriculture Group, said.

Ruth Njoki, a farmer, said a bag of potatoes is now selling at Sh2,000 down from Sh3,000 while that of carrots goes for Sh1,500 from Sh2,000. Besides the brokers whom they said are taking advantage of them, the farmers said prices of potatoes, snow peas, cabbages and carrots had dropped by 20 per cent due to closure of hotels in various parts of the country.

And to mark the World Food Safety Day, the farmers from Geta Green Agriculture group said they are practising sustainable farming.

Wanjiru said farmers in the area have moved away from use of pesticides and had contracted various hotels to buy their produce.
